THAMES Valley Harriers' Chris Smith produced an outstanding run to finish ninth in the senior men's race at the South of England Championships on Saturday.

Smith (pictured) made light of the demanding 15km course at Parliament Hill Fields, reaching the finish in 52 minutes 33 seconds, some way ahead of the next TVH finisher.

Nevertheless, Gordon Irvine recovered from a cautious start to record an excellent time of 59:17 in 117th place, with Manuel da Silva next home for TVH in 268th (1:04:12).

In the women's race, Lisa da Silva did not perform to her best and had to settle for 47th place and a time of 35:03, but Mohamud Adaan kept the TVH flag flying in the under-20 men's section.

Adaan pounded down the slippery final slope of an 8,000m course to finish 19th (28:53), while Naz Darwit closed up on the pack to take 43rd (30:03).

Ali Yahye was next in 76th (33:01), followed by Sean Pike-Locke in 92nd (35:25) as TVH finished ahead of both Ealing and Hillingdon in ninth place out of 12.

In the under-15 boys' race over 4,000m, James Murdoch held off TVH team-mate Hugo Cayssials - and several others who had beaten him at the previous week's Middlesex Championships - to finish 50th (17:18).

Cayssials was next to finish in 66th (17:35), with Nabil Toumi (223nd, 22:14), Samuel Cooper (227nd, 26:50) and Balal Toumi (228nd, 27:16) bringing up the rear.

The team finished 24th, while TVH's under-13 boys were just one place behind in their own event as Archie St Aubyn led them home in 93rd (13:16).

Joe Gilbert (131st, 13:51) edged ahead of Joe Cooper (134th, 13:54), with John Gray their fourth scorer in 157th (14:19) and Abraham da Costa Mendes not far behind in 167th (14:30).

Eugenia Klemos was the sole TVH finisher in the under-13 girls' event, taking 199th place in a time of 17:11.
